I have always loved music. I’ve always loved making music. But I love listening to it even more. Music has a way of communicating the complex and mysterious in ways more succinct and beautiful than our words. Music, good music, begs our attention; it captivates the humanity, the brokenness of our being to the point of awesomeness–that’s the point. Art is not to be objective, objective in the way we all like it to be. Therefore, music is the aesthetic voice of our deepest longings and thoughts.
Yet, I have a low, very low, tolerance for popular music, especially contemporary “Christian” music. It’s not just contemporary Christian music, but I could rant, so I’ll let the Square Peg Alliance speak for me:
“…We don’t write music so we can be the next big thing (or if we do, it hasn’t worked for us). We believe that there are folks out there who like music even if it isn’t played every three minutes on the radio, even if it isn’t on a big label, even if it isn’t accompanied by a music video, even if the shows aren’t flashy or even if the records don’t go platinum (or gold, or silver, or aluminum foil, etc.).”
I could say some harsh words about how I feel towards current “music,” but it’s not worth the effort when I could say some great things about the music I do support. I love music, period; but, my love for it is amplified when I can support those who love it and are good at what they do. So here is a compilation of a lot of the music I listen to and support. Because it ranges from Classical Baroque and classic jazz to modern experimental and folk, they are arranged accordingly (plus, if I don’t organize them for my sake, then I’ll go mad!).
